RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, His Excellency Edward J. Slattery, the Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Tulsa, Oklahoma, will celebrate his 75th Birthday on August 11, 2015; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed this joyous occasion by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, A native of Chicago, Bishop Edward J. Slattery was one of seven children of William and Winifred Slattery and attended BVM Grade School and Quigley Preparatory Seminary; and

 

WHEREAS, Bishop Edward J. Slattery graduated from St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and later a Master of Divinity degree; and

 

YJHEREAS, The Most Reverend Edward J. Slattery was ordained a priest on April 26,1966, by the late John Cardinal Cody; and

 

WHEREAS, The Most Reverend Edward J. Slattery began his ministry with the Catholic Church Extension Society in Chicago where he rose to serve as President; and

 

WHEREAS, Bishop Edward J. Slattery was named Associate Pastor of St. Rose of Lima Parish, an inner-city Latino parish on Chicago's South Side, and was later appointed its Pastor; and

 

WHEREAS, Bishop Edward J. Slattery was installed as the third Bishop of the Diocese of Tulsa at Holy Family Cathedral on January 12,1994; and

 

WHEREAS, In that role, Bishop Edward J. Slattery faithfully oversees 78 parishes, including mission churches, in eastern Oklahoma; and

 

WHEREAS, The holiness, sacrifice and dedication of Bishop Edward J. Slattery serve as an example to all; now, therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-ninth day of July, 2015, do hereby congratulate Bishop Edward J. Slattery on the occasion of his 75th Birthday; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Bishop Edward J. Slattery.
