Title: Recognition of Stephen Christy for 40 years of service to Andersonville and Ravenswood neighborhoods

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, for over 40 years, landscape architect Stephen Christy has through volunteer labor and contributions of time, skill, and finances been a leader in the renovation and improvement of the Andersonville neighborhood and the Ravenswood railway corridor; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Christy first moved to Andersonville in 1979 and has helped ensure the planting and maintenance of trees and other ornamental landscape across dozens of blocks, both directly and through the advice and support he has provided individual neighbors and neighborhood organizations; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Christy has led many efforts to preserve and improve Ravenswood corridor green spaces, including working in 1995 with then-Alderman Eugene Schulterto landscape the Ravenswood Corridor on both sides ofthe Metra tracks from Winnemac Avenue south to Irving Park Road, and in 2006 to raise money for stone walls, steps, and walking trails constructed using repurposed 125-year-old street curbing from Ravenswood Avenue, and as recently as 2020 to advocate for the use of repurposed Metra bridge stones in retaining walls and tiered gardens; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Christy continues to work with neighbors to improve the Ravenswood parkways from Ainslie Street south to Lawrence Avenue, and from Foster Avenue north to the Berwyn Avenue pedestrian tunnel, with the goal of creating a continuous walking path from Balmoral Street south to Lawrence Avenue; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Christy has worked with multiple neighborhood associations (including WEAR, WANT, ASNA, and 5000 N Ravenswood Neighbors) to help design and improve gardens and landscaping throughout the Andersonville and Ravenswood neighborhoods; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Christy has made numerous contributions to Chicago outside the Ravenswood corridor as well, including a survey of city parks and a three-volume historical analysis of the Chicago Park District, and in collaboration with Friends ofthe Forest Preserves and Friends of the Parks a th...
