RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Each year more than 800,000 of our neighbors across the City of Chicago and Cook County face food insecurity or need help putting food on their tables; and
WHEREAS, The faces of hunger are increasingly becoming older adults, veterans, college students, children, and people with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, In 2016, the Illinois General Assembly implemented the Breakfast After the Bell program to ensure that every child in our city and across our state receives a nutritious breakfast as part of the school day to foster a successful learning environment; and
WHEREAS, Those in need of food assistance often make difficult choices between meals and other necessities such as housing, health care, or utilities; and
WHEREAS, Vital assistance programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) help our struggling neighbors in need and must be protected and expanded; and
WHEREAS, September is Hunger Action Month, a 30-day nationwide campaign to raise awareness for hunger relief; and
WHEREAS, All Chicagoans are urged to come together during Hunger Action Month by pledging to raise awareness for the fight against hunger in our communities and by supporting those in need of food assistance; and
WHEREAS, The members, of the Chicago City Council believe that no one should go hungry and join the Greater Chicago Food Depository in the fight to end hunger and show City support by wearing orange pins representing Hunger Action Month; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor, and members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixth day of September, 2017, do hereby reaffirm our recognition and commitment to Hunger Action Month during the month of September throughout the City of Chicago; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable parchment copy of this resolution be presented to Kate Maehr, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
