RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael Anthony "Mike" Stepovich has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael Anthony "Mike" Stepovich was the last Territorial Governor of Alaska and the loving husband for fifty-five years of Matilda; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael Anthony "Mike" Stepovich was the much-adored father of thirteen children, the grandfather of thirty-seven and the great-grandfather of ten to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, The son of a Fairbanks gold miner, the Honorable Michael Anthony "Mike" Stepovich served his country in the military during World War II; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael Anthony "Mike" Stepovich set up a law practice in his home town of Fairbanks where he earned a reputation as a gifted trial attorney; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael Anthony "Mike" Stepovich served in the Territorial Legislature from 1950 to 1957 until he was appointed Governor of the Alaska Territory by President Dwight D. Eisenhower; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael Anthony "Mike" Stepovich was a leading advocate in the effort to gain statehood for Alaska; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Michael Anthony "Mike" Stepovich serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Michael Anthony "Mike" Stepovich will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Michael Anthony "Mike" Stepovich imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifth day of March, 2014, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Michael Anthony "Mike" Stepovich for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to...
