WHEREAS, The Honorable Richard S. Schweiker has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 89; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Richard S. Schweiker was a former United States Senator and Congressman from Pennsylvania who served under President Ronald Reagan as Secretary of Health and Human Services; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Richard S. Schweiker was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania and was an electrical technician on an aircraft carrier in the United States Navy during World War II; and

WHEREAS, After returning home from the war, the Honorable Richard S. Schweiker graduated from Pennsylvania State University and joined the family business, the American Olean Tile Company; and

WHEREAS, In 1955 the Honorable Richard S. Schweiker married Claire Joan Coleman, the host of the children's television show, Romper Room, and the couple raised five children; and

WHEREAS, A Republican who was widely respected for his independence, the Honorable Richard S. Schweiker served in Congress from 1960 to 1968 and in the Senate from 1969 to 1981; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Richard S. Schweiker was also President Reagan's vice presidential running mate in the unsuccessful 1976 bid for the White House; and

WHEREAS, During his tenure as a legislator on Capitol Hill, the Honorable Richard S. Schweiker was known for his liberal views, but later adopted a more conservative agenda; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Richard S. Schweiker was Secretary of Health and Human Services from 1981 to 1983; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Richard S. Schweiker serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable Richard S. Schweiker to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
