RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING JESSICA MARQUEZ ON HER POEM WINNING THE SOUTH SIDE WEEKLY STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST
WHEREAS, Jessica Marquez's poem, Anita Jumps the Red Lines, won first place in the South Side Weekly Student Essay Contest for middle school students; and
WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of this joyous occasion by the Honorable Michael D. Rodriguez, Alderman of the 22nd Ward; and
WHEREAS, Jessica is an eighth grader at Gary Elementary, and will be attending Jones College Prep this upcoming school year; and
WHEREAS, Jessica lives in the Little Village neighborhood where her family has resided for the past 27 years; and
WHEREAS, As Jessica's poem alternates between Spanish and English, it bounces between themes of racism, redlining, community, the tension between hope and despair, and fighting for progress; and
WHEREAS, The 22nd Ward community is proud of Jessica's hard work and creativity that shines a light on important issues in our City; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this twenty-second day of June, 2022, do hereby express pride in celebration of Jessica Marquez and extend a congratulations to her for her success; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to Jessica Marquez.
