RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Czech Republic and Slovakia will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia in 2018; and
WHEREAS, IThe country split up into two sovereign states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, in 1993 but both countries will mark the anniversary; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this special milestone by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The First Republic was officially declared on Oct. 28, 1918, when novelist Alois Jirasek read the Proclamation of the Independence of Czechoslovakia in front of the Saint Wenceslas statue at Wenceslas Square; and
WHEREAS, The declaration was drafted by TomaS Garrigue Masaryk and American sculptor Gutzon Borglum and presented to the United States government on Oct. 17,1918; and
WHEREAS, The peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia came in the final days of World War I when the Austro-Hungarian Empire fell apart and it marked die first time since the Battle of White Mountain in 1620 that Bohemia was not under foreign rule; and
WHEREAS, During 2018, exhibits in the Czech Republic and Slovakia have proudly celebrated the rich history of Czechoslovakia and celebrations are being held across the world; and
WHEREAS, In the Chicago Metropolitan Area, a 100th Anniversary celebration hosted by Marek Kutek and Michael Jordan will be held on Friday, October 26,2018 at the Paris Restaurant, 3315 North Milwaukee Avenue, Northbrook, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, The special dinner event will celebrate the first established Democracy in Central Europe while also recognizing on a local level two other milestones that include the 200th Anniversary of the State of Illinois and Illinois and the 50th Anniversary of Special Olympics; now, therefore.
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirty-first day of October, 2018, hereby officially commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia; and
