WHEREAS, Joanne Gaus Day, a first grade teacher, is retiring from St. Richard's Catholic Elementary School after fifty-years of distinguished service to the community and to the many generations of students whose lives she has deeply and profoundly touched; and
WHEREAS, the Chicago City Council has been informed of her retirement by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Joanne Gaus Day. who grew up in the Beverly neighborhood, is a graduate of St. Cajetan Catholic Elementary School; Morgan Park High School; and Chicago State University where she minored in English; and
WHEREAS, Joanne Gaus Day began her career in elementary education at St. Richard's in the fall of 1968 as a third grade teacher; and
WHEREAS, over the years Joanne Gaus Day taught second and third grade homeroom; and
WHEREAS, in 1991 she began teaching second grade as a homeroom teacher; and
WHEREAS, among her varied assignments, Joanne Gaus Day taught math to first through third graders and science to second and third graders; and
WHEREAS, Joanne Gaus Day inspired and enriched her pupils, while at the same lime making learning fun through interactive participation in Halloween Pumpcans; Thanksgiving bean turkey or cornucopia pictures, Dinosaur Dioramas; President's Day biography projects and embryology, where students observe chicken eggs hatch and children get to name the chicks; and
WHEREAS, Joanne Gaus Day initiated the Summer Adventure Program featuring weekly field trips, arts, crafts and recreation and and has run every aspect of it for the past five years; and
WHEREAS, over the years Joanne Gaus Day has been nominated for many teaching awards during her fifty years at St. Richard's and was a recipient ofthe Heart of St. Richard award in 2005;and
WHEREAS, as a committed educator with exceptional ability, Joanne Gaus Day has devoted considerable time in leading extracurricular activities including the I-Pad Club, the game club, woodworking and ceramics as a means of stimulating an appreciation ...
