RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, Nicholas Oresko has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety-six; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, A native of Bayonne, New Jersey, Nicholas Oresko was a World War II veteran and the oldest-living recipient of the Medal of Honor; and
 
WHEREAS, Nicholas Oresko was presented the nation's highest military honor in 1945 by United States President Harry Truman at a White House ceremony; and
 
WHEREAS, A Master Sergeant, Nicholas Oresko was recognized for his bravery during the Battle of the Bulge as a member of the 94th Infantry-Division commanded by General George S. Patton; and
 
WHEREAS, Under a barrage of enemy fire, Nicholas Oresko single-handedly eliminated two German machine gun nests using hand grenades near Tettingen, Germany; and
 
WHEREAS, During his lone assault, Nicholas Oresko was gravely wounded in the hip and leg by machine gun fire while destroying the first enemy bunker; and
 
WHEREAS, Despite his serious injuries, Nicholas Oresko was able to crawl into position and take out the second enemy bunker; and
 
WHEREAS, The heroic actions of Nicholas Oresko were credited with saving the lives of numerous American soldiers; and
 
WHEREAS, The valor, sacrifice and dedication of Nicholas Oresko serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, A much-heralded example of our nation's "greatest generation," Nicholas Oresko will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his friends and admirers; now, therefore
 
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixteenth day of October, 2013, do hereby commemorate Nicholas Oresko for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVEDyStih&t a suitable copy/of this resolution be presented to the family of Nicholas Oresko.
