RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, On July 12, 2011, Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry, a U.S. Army Ranger, became the second living recipient of the Medal of Honor for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this honor by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, While serving in Afghanistan's Paktia Province, Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry threw a live grenade away from his fellow soldiers, losing his right hand in the process; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry took action despite his injuries and with no regard for his personal safety, thereby saving the lives of his fellow Rangers; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry has served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, with a total deployment time of twenty-eight months; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry becomes the ninth military service member to receive the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest award for valor, since the start of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry was praised by President Barack Obama for both his heroism and his dedication to the cause of peace; and
WHEREAS, Humble in his acceptance of the Medal of Honor, Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry stated that he is no more deserving of gratitude than any other service member in the armed forces; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-eighth day of July, 2011, do hereby congratulate Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry on having received the Medal of Honor and do hereby express our gratitude for his heroism and years of military service; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry.
