RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Bishop Edsel A. Ammons has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-six; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Edsel A. Ammons was a national figure in the United Methodist Church and the loving husband of Helen; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Edsel A. Ammons was the much-adored father of five children to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, A leader in the civil rights movement, Bishop Edsel A. Ammons was known for the power of his sermons and his passion for justice; and
WHEREAS, Born into a musical family and the son of legendary boogie-woogie pianist Albert Ammons, Bishop Edsel A. Ammons followed his own course in life; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Edsel A. Ammons attended Roosevelt University, the Garrett Biblical Institute and Chicago Theological Seminary; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Edsel A. Ammons was consecrated a Bishop in 1976 and served in churches in Michigan and Ohio before moving to Evanston in 1992 where he was Bishop-in-Residence at Garrett Evangelical; and
WHEREAS, A gifted educator, Bishop Edsel A. Ammons was a Professor at the seminary who taught both the church and the society with a focus on race relations; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Bishop Edsel A. Ammons serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Edsel A. Ammons will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Bishop Edsel A. Ammons imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this ninth day of February, 2011, do hereby commemorate Bishop Edsel A. Ammons for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
