RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Karen Lewis, a widely admired labor leader, has officially retired as the President of the Chicago Teachers Union; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A native of Chicago, Karen Lewis was raised in a family of teachers; and
WHEREAS, Karen Lewis attended Mount Holyoke College before graduating from Dartmouth College; and
WHEREAS, Karen Lewis joined the union in 1988 and worked for 22 years as a King College Prep High School and was a Lane Technical High School chemistry teacher before becoming President on the Chicago Teachers Union in 2010; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her illustrious career, Karen Lewis has upheld the finest and most noble traditions of public service; and
WHEREAS, Karen Lewis led the Chicago Teachers Union on a 10-day strike in September of 2012; and
WHEREAS, Karen Lewis was a 2015 recipient of the Deborah H. Meier Hero in Education Award bestowed by Fairtest; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Karen Lewis serve as an example to all; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twentieth day of September, 2018, do hereby congratulate Karen Lewis on her retirement as President of the Chicago Teachers Union; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVE3, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Karen Lewi^_/
