Title: Congratulations extended to North Park Village on 100th anniversary

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, North Park Village observes a milestone this year, celebrating 100 years of serving the community; and,
WHEREAS, this body has been apprised of this event by the Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and
WHEREAS, on February 17, 1915, the city of Chicago held a dedication ceremony for the Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium, located on a 160-acre site bound by Pulaski, Peterson, Central Park and Bryn Mawr, which was, at the time, a relatively untouched landscape on the northwest side of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, with impressive, forward-thinking architecture, and beautiful landscaping, the Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium had the mission of providing a recuperative, restorative hospital environment surrounded by native plants and fresh air, a novel idea at the time; and

WHEREAS, prior to the opening of the sanitarium, only 200 public hospital beds in Chicago were available for patients of tuberculosis, while there were more than 10,000 registered cases in Chicago in 1914. The Sanitarium was praised as the finest institution of its kind in the world, and was the first sanitarium to have a maternity ward; and

WHEREAS, The city closed the sanitarium in 1974, due to declining numbers of patients after the discovery of an antibiotic cure for tuberculosis, and the fate of this historic site was uncertain; and
WHEREAS, preserving this site as a location for development and public use, North Park Village adapted to the changes in use and transformed into a vibrant community; and

WHEREAS, the North Park Village site continues to serve many different interests and needs of the community adding these new facilities to the community in the past few decades such as senior housing, Chicago Park District facilities, a school for the developmental^ disabled, a non-denominational Chapel; and

WHEREAS, North Park Village has continued to grow with the addition of a veteran's memorial, a tranquil waterfall and rock garden, a nature preserve, and bea...
