RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, God in His infinite wisdom has called Walter Mackiw to his eternal reward; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by the Honorable Marty Quinn, Alderman ofthe 13th Ward; and

WHEREAS, Walter Mackiw, beloved husband of Helen (nee Shimkus); dear father of Patricia and Stephen (Maria); cherished grandfather of Gabriela and Mitchell. Walter leaves one remaining brother, Joseph, as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews in Ukraine. Born in Voroblewych, near L'viv Ukraine, on April 2,1925, Walter left home at age 18 to defend his country in war. Subsequent to spending six years in Munich, Germany; he arrived in New York at the age of 24 and then moved on to Chicago, joining Nativity BVM Ukrainian Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society; he remained an active and loyal member until his passing December 30, 2012; also serving on its parish council. Singing was Walter's passion and he did so regularly in the church choir. He also belonged to the Ukrainian SURMA choir for 30 years, performing at various locations, including the 1988 concert at the then Orchestra Hall commemorating the Millennium of Christianity in Ukraine. Following the demise of the Soviet Union, Walter was able to reestablish contact with his family in Ukraine and returned in 1991 and again in 1992 to spend time with them in his home town. Numerous letters and phone calls were exchanged in the years that followed. Walter was an avid golfer, took pride in upkeep of his lawn and in the vegetable garden he planted and nurtured every year. His holubczy (Ukrainian dish) was famous at every church picnic. Walter Mackiw leaves a legacy of faith, dignity, compassion and love; now, therefore,
