RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Joachim Roenneberg has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 99; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Joachim Roenneberg was a Norwegian hero of World War II who led a daring raid which successfully blew up a plant producing heavy water denying Nazi Germany of an essential ingredient it could have used to make nuclear weapons; and

WHEREAS, Joachim Roenneberg was recruited for the raid by Britain's wartime intelligence gathering and sabotage unit and is considered one of the finest resistance fighters of the war; and

WHEREAS, Joachim Roenneberg and his team parachuted with his team into southern Norway where they met up with other commandos and destroyed the production line of the heavily-guarded plant in February of 1943; and

WHEREAS, Called "Operation Gunnerside," the heroic raid was depicted in the movie "The Heroes of Telemark," starring Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris; and

WHEREAS, Wearing a British uniform, Joachim Roenneberg and his group skied hundreds of miles across mountains to escape to neighboring neutral Sweden

WHEREAS, The courage, sacrifice and dedication of Joachim Roenneberg serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Joachim Roenneberg to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, Joachim Roenneberg was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Joachim Roenneberg imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirty-first day of October, 2018, do hereby commemorate Joachim Roenneberg for his grace-filled life a...
