RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Sonya Peres has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-eight; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A woman of dignity, grace and charm, Sonya Peres was the wife of the President of the State of Israel; and
WHEREAS, Sonya Peres was the much-adored mother of a daughter and two sons; and
WHEREAS, Born Sonya German in the Ukraine, she emigrated to Israel as a child and in early adulthood served as a nurse in a British Army hospital in Cairo; and
WHEREAS, In 1945 Sonya Peres married the Honorable Shimon Peres, who was elected to serve as President of Israel in 2007; and
WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Tel Aviv, Sonya Peres shunned the limelight and preserved her privacy; and
WHEREAS, Sonya Peres worked tirelessly on behalf of the poor and less fortunate; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Sonya Peres serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Sonya Peres will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Sonya Peres imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this ninth day of February, 2011, do hereby commemorate Sonya Peres for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Sonya Peres.
