WHEREAS, The Honorable James Jeffords has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 80; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable James Jeffords was a retired United States Senator from Vermont and the loving husband of the late Elizabeth; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable James Jeffords was the much-adored father of Laura and Leonard to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, A native of Rutland, Vermont, the Honorable James Jeffords was the son of the Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable James Jeffords graduated from Yale University and Harvard Law School; and

WHEREAS, While practicing law in Shrewsbury, the Honorable James Jeffords became active in local politics and was elected to the state Senate in 1966; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable James Jeffords served from 1969 to 1973 as the Attorney General of Vermont and helped to draft landmark environmental laws, including land protection legislation; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable James Jeffords was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1974 and the United States Senate in 1988; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his long and illustrious career, the Honorable James Jeffords was known for exemplifying the independent spirit and courage for which the people of Vermont are admired; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable James Jeffords serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable James Jeffords will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable James Jeffords imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
