CELEBRATING WOODLAWN AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH'S 85th ANNIVERSARY AND HONORING DR. BETTYE ALLEN
AND MRS. JOSAPHINE BOND

WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that members of this Chamber congratulate Woodlawn African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church on its 85"' Anniversary and Honor Dr. Bettye Allen and Mrs. Josephine Bond;

WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of this celebration by Willie B. Cochran, Alderman of the 20"' Ward;

WHEREAS, Reverend W. J. Conquest organized the Woodlawn African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church on January 13, 1929 at the corner of 66th and Langley Avenue and then moved the congregation to its present building at 6456 S. Evans before being transferred eight months later;

WHEREAS, The church came under the leadership of Reverend Archibald Carey, Jr. in 1930 after being appointed by his father, Right Reverend A.J. Carey, Sr. the presiding Bishop of the Fourth Episcopal District;

WHEREAS, Over 19 years as the head of the church, Reverend Carey, Jr. grew the congregation from 49 individuals to over a thousand and instituted such idyllic programs as: the Usher Board, Young Adult Choir, Missionary Society, Bible Study, Ladies Auxiliary and many many more;

WHEREAS, Because of the success of Reverend Carey, Jr. the church expanded to include the neighboring property;

WHEREAS, Reverend T. Dean Scott was appointed as pastor in 1949 to succeed Reverend Carey, Jr. as the head of the church and carried on the tradition of service started by Reverend Carey, Jr. by organizing the Junior Church to help inspire the youth. He also established or helped plan Sunshine Guild to bring cheer to the sick and homebound;

WHEREAS, Now headed by Revered Robert Bailey, Sr., Woodlawn A.M.E. Church continues in the spirit of ministry and community;
