RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Ruben Castillo has been sworn in as the first Latino Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The son of a Mexican immigrant father and Puerto-Rican born mother, the Honorable Ruben Castillo was raised in the West Town neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Ruben Castillo attended Gordon Tech High School and Loyola University Chicago before graduating from Northwestern University Law School; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Ruben Castillo joined the law firm of Jenner & Block and served under federal prosecutor Dan Webb; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Ruben Castillo concluded his tenure at the U.S. Attorney's Office in 1988 to serve as the director and legal counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund in Chicago; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Ruben Castillo joined the law firm of Kirkland & Ellis LLP as a partner; and
WHEREAS, In 1994, President William Jefferson Clinton named the Honorable Ruben Castillo to the federal bench; and
WHEREAS, For nearly two decades, the Honorable Ruben Castillo has earned the respect and admiration of his peers for his wide-ranging knowledge of the law and commitment to best practices; and
WHEREAS, As Chief Judge, the Honorable Ruben Castillo supervises matters of great sensitivity, including grand jury empanelling, whistleblower suits filed under seal and federal requests to install wiretaps or conduct other forms of electronic surveillance; and
WHEREAS, As a co-chair of the American Bar Association's Trial Practice Committee, the Honorable Ruben Castillo has helped foster the most efficient use of court room time by sharing his wisdom and hard-won practical experience with other lawyers; and
