RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, Pastora San Juan Cafferty has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of seventy-two; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, A resident of the Gold Coast, Pastora San Juan Cafferty was a renowned educator and the loving wife of the late Dr. Henry Russe and the late Michael Cafferty; and
 
WHEREAS, A native of Cuba, Pastora San Juan Cafferty earned a master's degree and a doctorate degree in American Literary and Cultural History from George Washington University; and
 
WHEREAS, In 1971 Pastora San Juan Cafferty joined the faculty of the University of Chicago where she ably served for thirty-four years in the School of Social Service Administration specializing in race, ethnicity and immigration; and
 
WHEREAS, Pastora San Juan Cafferty traveled extensively and wrote books on the diversity of Hispanic cultures; and
 
WHEREAS, Pastora San Juan Cafferty received government appointments from four United States Presidents, an Illinois Governor and three Chicago Mayors; and
 
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Pastora San Juan Cafferty serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, A woman of dignity, grace and charm, Pastora San Juan Cafferty will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
 
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Pastora San Juan Cafferty imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighth day of May, 2013, do hereby commemorate Pastora San Juan Cafferty for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
 
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Pastora San Juan Cafferty.
