SALUTING THE SHRINER'S CHILDRENS HOSPITAL OF CHICAGO
WHEREAS, Shriners Hospitals for Children in Chicago is celebrating its 85 1 year as one of this city's most notable pediatric orthopedic institutions in the nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, The first Shriners Hospital was dedicated in Shreveport, Louisiana on September 16, 1922 and on March 20, 1926 the Chicago facility opened its doors as an orthopedic hospital. Located on Chicago's far west side, the campus houses one of the busiest hospitals in their international hospital system; and
WHEREAS, Shriners Hospitals for Children in Chicago is a 60-bed pediatric orthopedic, spinal cord injury and cleft lip and palate hospital utilizing a family-centered approach to care. It is designed to support the whole family during the acute and reconstructive phases of a child's injury. This noteworthy healthcare facility treats children from all over the country as well as around the world and has unique relationships with some of the top hospitals and universities globally; and
WHEREAS, The Ancient Arabic Order ofthe Nobles ofthe Mystic Shrine, best-known known as Shriners was established in 1870 as new fraternity for freemasons stressing fun and fellowship; and
WHEREAS, The Shriners are most known and respected for their primary charitable work of establishing and maintaining the Shriners Hospitals for Children, a network of twenty-two hospitals in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Originally established to treat young victims of polio, they broadened their scope after that disease was eradicated. They now deal with orthopedic care, burn treatment, cleft lip and palate care and spinal cord injury rehabilitation. All treatment at Shriner's Hospitals for Children is offered without any financial obligation to patients and their families, with no requirements in regard to religion, race or relationship to a Shriner, only that patients be under the age of eighteen and treatable; and
