RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The clergy and faithful of Saint Clare of Montefalco Parish celebrated the joyful occasion of its 100th Anniversary on Sunday, October 23, 2016; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Saint Clare of Montefalco Parish on the Southwest Side was first organized as a mission in 1909 by the Reverend James F. Green, O.S.A., President of St. Rita College; and
WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Reverend Green, a large section of property was purchased in the Gage Park community between Talman and Washtenaw Avenues and 54th and 55th Streets; and
WHEREAS, In 1910 a combination church and school structure was completed and Catholic children began to attend classes in the fall of that year under the direction of the Adrian Dominican Sisters; and
WHEREAS, In 1916 Archbishop George Mundelein raised the status of the mission to a full parish and put the Augustinians in charge of the parish with the Reverend J.J. Barthouski, O.S. A., as its first resident pastor; and
WHEREAS, By 1920 a convent was completed and a second combination church and school building was constructed in 1923; and
WHEREAS, Robust growth of the parish after World War II resulted in the construction of a new church, convent and rectory during the 1950s; and
WHEREAS, In 1961 the cornerstone was laid for a new school which was opened the following year; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the Advent season of 1979, the parish launched a program to welcome back lapsed Catholics; and
WHEREAS, In 2002 the Order of Capuchin Franciscans of the Province of St. Joseph arrived at the parish and since then have devoted their service to ministering to the faithful; and
WHEREAS, Saint Clare of Montefalco Parish has been an integral part of the community for 100 years and has enriched the lives and souls of all its members; now, therefore
