MEMORIAL RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that members of this Chamber learned of the death of John C. Melaniphy Jr. on March 10, 2014; and
WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of his passing by The Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Born in Chicago on January 30, 1936, John was a graduate of Mt. Carmel High School and the University of Illinois. He began his real estate career at Real Estate Research Corporation where he became Senior Vice President. In 1969, he joined Kentucky Fried Chicken as Director of Real Estate and Construction where he set up their real estate department and selected and built over 700 KFC units. In 1971, John founded Melaniphy & Associates, Inc., an international real estate consulting firm where he counseled thousands of developers, retailers, restaurants, and shopping center owners. Some of his major projects included Mall of America, Woodfield Mall, Navy Pier, Easton Town Center, Mundo E. and the Rock & Hall of Fame, among many others; and
WHEREAS, John is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Carol Joann (Sugrue); loving father of John C. Melaniphy III (Sarah), Michael J. Melaniphy, Laurie M. Whaley (Steve), Patricia A. Talbot (Kevin), Erin A. Melaniphy, Megan T. Melaniphy, Sharon T. Cuncannon (Andrew); cherished grandfather of 15 grandchildren and one great grandchild; dear brother of the late FJ (Mel) Melaniphy (Margaret), Joan (John) Grogan, Patricia (late Richard) Gibbons, Margaret Shelkey, Joey Ploetz and many nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, John will be deeply missed, but the memory of his character, intelligence and compassion will live on in those who knew and loved him; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this second day of April 2014, do hereby express our sorrow on the death of John C. Melaniphy Jr. and extend to his family and friends our deepest sympathy; and
