TRIBUTE TO THE LIFE OF VAN C. WALTERS
WHEREAS, In His Infinite Wisdom, Almighty God has granted Van C. Walters, a loving father, outstanding teacher for Chicago Public Schools, colleague, friend as well as an extremely charitable member of his community, to his eternal reward, Saturday, March 20th 2010; and
WHEREAS, Van Walters was born September 16, 1948 in Montgomery, Alabama to the union of Brownie and Smithie Walters. He was the youngest of eight children who always brought laughter into his home. He had a knack for solving problems and a competitive quality that was demonstrated through his participation in math contests and spelling bees. In addition, he played the trumpet in his high school band; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School, Van Walters continued his education and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics with honors from Tuskegee Institute in 1970 where he was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; and
WHEREAS, Immediately following graduation, Van Walters was employed by the Chicago Transit Authority until he was able to follow his true passion; teaching and molding young minds. After receiving his Chicago Teaching Certificate, he began the first of thirty-four years of teaching. He also unselfishly contributed his time to serve as the Boys Varsity and Girls Basketball Coach; and
WHEREAS, Van Walters was very unique and committed to his students as well as youth in general and was able to bond, thus earning their respect. He believed he never met a "bad student" and was never deterred by negative energies. Thus his motto: "VAN CAN"; and
WHEREAS, Van Walters was a man with many titles but one trumped all. Fatherhood was his most precious pride and joy. He instilled in his progeny wisdom, family values and integrity; the foundation of family, strength and solidarity; and
WHEREAS, Van Walters was preceded in passing by his father and mother, Brownie and Smithie Walters; his brother Earl and sister, Elois Maxin...
