Declaration of April 26,2014 as "Mary B. Galvin Day" in Chicago
WHEREAS, Mary B. Galvin has made passionate contributions to the arts throughout the world over the past five decades; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Galvin has truly been a global citizen in the arts and has served on the boards of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera and Joffrey Ballet in Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Galvin has played a key role as co-founder of the Stradivari Society, which has provided valuable and prestigious string instruments to world-class musicians such as Midori, Joshua Bell and Gil Shaham; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Galvin encouraged Motorola Inc. to provide sponsorship for one of the Japanese tours of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra 20 years ago; and
WHEREAS, The Paul M. Galvin Foundation, founded by Mary B. Galvin and Robert Galvin, has provided major support for the Illinois Institute of Technology, the Art Institute of Chicago Women's Board, The Joffrey Ballet, the Museum of Science & Industry, the United Way of Chicago, Illinois Math & Science Academy, the Greater Chicago Food Depository, and the Shedd Aquarium; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Galvin personally presented one of her Stradivari-sponsored violinists in a private concert she hosted in Beijing for the Presidents of China Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao in 2002; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Galvin sponsors a monthly free recital at the Women's Athletic Club in Chicago, featuring recipients of Stradivari Society violins and attended by over 100 people.
WHEREAS, Mrs. Galvin studied violin as a child, and her love of music and understanding of the importance of early musical training is exemplified through her patronage of the Magical Strings of Youth at the Betty Haag Academy; and
WHEREAS, a gift from the Robert W. Galvin Foundation in the amount of $6 million dollars was made in her honor to Northwestern University in support of Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music; and
