WHEREAS, Hales Franciscan Catholic High School is an all male Catholic institution located in the greater Bronzeville community on the City's South Side, and is one of three historically Black Catholic High Schools in the nation, and the smallest of 15 schools in its Conference,
WHEREAS, in 2005 the late Attorney Donald Hubert, with a financial pledge of 5 millions dollars from Chicago basketball icon Michael Jordan, started a Capital Building Campaign that resulted in numerous building improvements to a structure built in 1962,
WHEREAS, Hales Franciscan has excelled scholastically under the leadership of Principal Arthur Reliford, a long time community activist and mentor,
WHEREAS, Hales Franciscan has a school philosophy that evolves around three core values that the students and administration adhere to, those being teamwork, discipline and leadership,
WHEREAS, Hales Franciscan was the smallest school to compete in the State Playoffs, and has an exemplary Coach and mentor in Athletic Director Lawrence Nails,
WHEREAS, on March 12, 2011, The Hales Franciscan Spartans won the State Class 2A Basketball Championship, beating Murphysboro High School 61 to 47 in the Peoria Civic Center,
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Hales Franciscan Spartans, Principal Arthur Reliford and Coach Lawrence Nails are to be commended for their outstanding scholastic achievements and athletic sportsmanship, and for bringing positive attendance and accolade to the school, community and the City of Chicago,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and the members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago, assembled this Fourth day of May, 2011, do hereby offer our hearty congratulations to the Hales Franciscan Spartans for a job well done on the occasion of their triumph as Illinois State Champions.
