RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Jane Ellen Raley has gone to her eternal reward at the age of 57; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident, of Highland Park, Jane Ellen Raley was a widely admired member of the legal community and the loving wife of Jonathan Haile; and

WHEREAS, Jane Ellen Raley was the much-adored mother of Tom and Katherine to whom she imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Jane Ellen Raley was the cherished daughter of Joan and Edward Raley and the dear sister of John, Robert and Nancy; and

WHEREAS, Jane Ellen Raley earned both her undergraduate and law degrees from Indiana University and began her career at the Illinois State Appellate Defender's Office where she represented indigent felony clients; and

WHEREAS, In 2000 Jane Ellen Raley joined the Northwestern University Law School's Center on Wrongful Convictions; and

WHEREAS, During her tenure, Jane Ellen Raley was a passionate advocate for the wrongly convicted and played an instrumental role winning the freedom of 11 wrongly convicted inmates from prison; and

WHEREAS, As a professor at Northwestern, Jane Ellen Raley taught and mentored students who went on to pursue careers in public service; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Jane Ellen Raley serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, Her love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Jane Ellen Raley to her family members, friends and all who knew her, and enabled her to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, Jane Ellen Raley will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Jane Ellen Raley imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
