TRIBUTE TO THE LATE YUSUF AHMED PATEL
A resolution adopted by the City Council of the City of Chicago, sponsored by Alderman Debra L. Silverstein, 50th Ward -
WHEREAS, The members of the City Council are saddened to learn of the death of Yusuf Ahmed Patel of Chicago, who passed away on December 7, 2018; and
WHEREAS, Yusuf Patel was born in India in 1949, and dedicated his life to education and community service. He earned a Master's degree in Education, Measurement and Evaluation from M.S. University in Baroda, India, graduating with High Honors in July of 1973; and
WHEREAS, Yusuf Patel came to the United States in 1974 and continued his education. He graduated from Roosevelt University in Chicago in 1977 with a Master's in Special Education, then used his education to serve his community. He went to work for the Chicago Public School system in October of 1979 and taught for nearly 30 years until his retirement in June of 2009; and
WHEREAS, Yusuf Patel was very involved in the 50th Ward and Rogers Park communities. He dedicated himself to helping newly arrived immigrants, tirelessly donating his time and resources to aiding refugees who were settling in the Chicagoland area; and
WHEREAS, Yusuf Patel was devoted to his family. He was a loving husband to Jamila Patel and father to Zaheer Patel, Sarfaraz Patel, and Mahnaz Patel; and
WHEREAS, Yusuf Patel worked closely with community leaders, activists and government officials. He was accessible to anyone that wanted to speak with him, and freely gave of his time to those that wanted to meet him and needed his help. He was a pillar of the Devon community and of Jamia Masjid, the local area Mosque; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this twenty-third day of January, 2019, mourn the passing of Yusuf Ahmed Patel, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and
