WHEREAS, on the afternoon of November 19, 2018, a shooting carried out by a lone gunman occurred at Mercy Hospital & Medical Center in Chicago's Bronzeville community claiming the lives of Chicago Police Officer Samuel Jimenez of the 2nd District (Wentworth Avenue), emergency room physician, Dr. Tamara O'Neal and pharmacy resident Dayna Less; and
WHEREAS, the tragic death of Officer Samuel Jimenez marks the second time a respected and honored member of the Chicago Police Department has fallen in the line of duty in 2018; and
WHEREAS, the Chicago City Council has been informed of this tragic event by Alderman Edward M. Burke and Alderman Patrick Thompson; and
WHEREAS, while on a mail run to the post office with his partner, Officer Armando Zambrano, Officer Samuel Jimenez, a loving husband, the father of three young children and a respected friend and colleague instilled with a passion to serve the public, responded to a radio report of an active shooter engaged in a verbal altercation that turned violent outside the hospital shortly after 3:00 p.m.; and
WHEREAS, with little regard for their own personal safety Officer Samuel Jimenez and Officer Armando Zambrano chased the gunman into the hospital lobby where shots were exchanged; and
WHEREAS, the personal bravery exhibited by Officer Samuel Jimenez and the responding officers from the SWAT Team prevented a possible shooting rampage that would likely resulted in the death and injury to scores of patients, visitors and hospital personnel; and
WHEREAS, Officer Saniuel Jimenez graduated Foreman High School and Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago before beginning his career in public service as a civilian detention aide assigned to Chicago Police Department lockups; and
WHEREAS, Officer Samuel Jimenez, praised for his personal drive and dedication, graduated the six-month police department training period and was assigned to the Town Hall District in February 2017 before being posted to the 2nd District; a...
