RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Ernie Terrell has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 75; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A longtime resident of the Roseland community, Ernie Terrell was a World Boxing Association champion and the loving husband of Maxine; and
WHEREAS, Ernie Terrell was the much-adored father of David Anderson and Deborah Anderson to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, One of ten children of sharecropper parents, Ernie Terrell was born in Belzoni, Mississippi, and moved to Chicago where he attended Farragut High School; and
WHEREAS, Ernie Terrell became a professional boxer in 1957 and was feared in the ring for his towering reach and lighting fast left jab; and
WHEREAS, During his highly renowned boxing career, Ernie Terrell won 46 of his 55 fights, 21 by a knockout punch; and
WHEREAS, Ernie Terrell most famously survived 15 rounds in a widely televised punishing loss to Muhammad Ali in 1967; and
WHEREAS, Known to his neighbors simply as "Champ," Ernie Terrell lived for decades near 111th and Halsted Streets and twice ran for Alderman of the 34th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Following his boxing career, Ernie Terrell worked as a fight promoter, singer and record producer and founded a janitorial company that employed 100 workers; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Ernie Terrell serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Ernie Terrell to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Ernie Terrell will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Ernie Terrell imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
