RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Walter D. Ehlers has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety-two; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of Buena Park, California, Walter D. Ehlers was a recipient of the Medal of Honor and the loving husband for fifty-eight years of Dorothy; and

WHEREAS, Walter D. Ehlers was the much-adored father of Cathy, Tracy and Lt. Colonel Walter D., Jr. (Ret.) to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, During the D-Day invasion of World War II, Walter D. Ehlers exhibited great heroism and bravery; and

WHEREAS, As a 23-year-old Staff Sergeant, Walter D. Ehlers charged through enemy gunfire on the beaches of Normandy to knock out two enemy machine gun nests, actions which saved the lives of countless American soldiers; and

WHEREAS, Walter D. Ehlers' brother, Roland, who had enlisted alongside him in the Army in 1940, arrived on another boat and was killed in action; and

WHEREAS, Following the war, Walter D. Ehlers worked for many years as a benefits counselor for the United States Veterans Administration; and

WHEREAS, Walter D. Ehlers was invited to every presidential inauguration since that of President Dwight D. Eisenhower; and

WHEREAS, The bravery, sacrifice and dedication of Walter D. Ehlers serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, Walter D. Ehlers will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Walter D. Ehlers imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifth day of March, 2014, do hereby commemorate Walter D. Ehlers for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
