RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, David McCullough, a widely renowned writer and historian, will serve as the featured speaker on May 13, 2013, at a special event hosted by the American Writers Museum Foundation and the Chicago Club; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A two-time Pulitzer Prize winning author and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, David McCullough will deliver remarks entitled, "Reflections on Reading and Writing"; and

WHEREAS, David McCullough ardently supports the mission of the American Writers Museum Foundation; and

WHEREAS, The American Writers Museum Foundation seeks to establish in Chicago the first national museum in the United States dedicated to celebrating American writers and exploring their influence on the nation's history, identity and culture; and .

WHEREAS, During his illustrious career, David McCullough has been an editor, essayist, teacher, lecturer, and familiar presence on public television as host of Smithsonian World, The American Experience, and narrator of numerous documentaries, including Ken Burns' The Civil War; and

WHEREAS, A native of Pittsburgh, David McCullough graduated with honors in English literature from Yale University, where he met author Thornton Wilder, and after considering careers in politics and the arts, was inspired to become an author; and

WHEREAS, A master in the art of narrative history, David McCullough will deliver his remarks in the Daniel Burnham Room of the Chicago Club, 81 East Van Buren Street, Chicago, Illinois; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighth day of May, 2013, do hereby officially welcome David McCullough to the City of Chicago; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That David McCullough be designated as an Honorary Fire Chief; and
