RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, In 2011, the Gonnella Baking Company celebrates one-hundred twenty-five years of business excellence in the City of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this milestone by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Company officials state that this anniversary designates the Gonnella Bread Company as the oldest baker in Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Alessandro Gonnella, a Tuscan immigrant, opened the first Gonnella bakery in 1886, specializing in Italian and French-style breads; and
WHEREAS, Ten years later, Alessandro Gonnella moved the bakery to a location near Grand Avenue and began bringing members of his extended family to the United States from Italy to help grow the business; and
WHEREAS, In 1915, the Gonnella Bread Company moved to its current location at Damen and Erie, where bakers continue to create nationally sought after breads; and
WHEREAS, Still a family-owned enterprise, the Gonnella Bread Company now maintains three baking facilities and two frozen dough plants, insisting that its breads are good enough not to require butter; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of April, 2011, do hereby congratulate the Gonnella Baking Company on the occasion of this important milestone; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Gonnella Baking Company Foundation.
