MEMORIAL RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Chuck Turner, born on July 15, 1920, was called by God to his eternal reward on July 3, 2011; and
WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of his passing by The Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Chuck Turner, was an active and vital member of his community. The beloved husband of Estelle, for fifty-two years, whom he met while attending a USO dance; the loving father of Walter, Valerie and Virginia; dear friend and relative of many; a resident of the Mayfair community since 1947, Chuck Turner leaves a legacy of faith, compassion, dignity and love; and
WHEREAS, Chuck Turner, was a member of "The Buzzard Brigade" during World War II. The Torpedo Squadron Ten (VT-10) was commissioned in April 1942 and flew the Grumman TBF and TBM avenger torpedo bombers. "The Buzzard Brigade" served two combat cruises on the Enterprise as well as one on USS Intrepid CV_11, seeing action at Santa Cruz, Guadalcanal, Truk, and the sinking ofthe super-battleship Yamato. For its contribution in the decisive Naval Battle of Guadalcanal -12-15 November 1941 - Air Group 10 was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation, also awarded to the First Marine Division (Reinforced) on Guadalcanal; and
WHEREAS, Chuck Turner, together with his unit, was captured by Chinese communist soldiers when their plane had to make a forced landing due to engine trouble while flying over the northern part of China. As "guests of the Chinese communists" they were treated as well as possible and many of the people shared all they had with them during their trek to freedom approximately thirty days later; and
WHEREAS, Chuck Turner, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star and numerous other commendations; and
WHEREAS, Chuck Turner, was the President of the Torpedo Squadron's Ten's reunion group, who he met with on an annual basis; and
WHEREAS, Chuck Turner did volunteer work with Blind Services, Incorporated. He went there twice a week, via...
