RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Edith R. Wyden has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety-one; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A native of Germany, Edith R. Wyden was the much-adored mother of the Honorable Ron and the late Jeff and the grandmother of four; and
WHEREAS, Edith R. Wyden fled Nazi Germany with her family in 1936, traveling first to Iraq before emigrating to the United States in 1939; and
WHEREAS, Edith R. Wyden joined the U.S. military in 1944, serving for two years with the Women's Army Corps in England, France and Germany; and
WHEREAS, Edith R. Wyden held a bachelor's degree in Archeology from the University of Rochester and a masters degree in Oriental Studies from Yale University; and
WHEREAS, Edith R. Wyden spoke fluent German, French, and Spanish, and worked as an industrial economist, researcher, and reference librarian, spending much of her career at California's Stanford Research Institute; and
WHEREAS, United States Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon described his mother as a consummate achiever who maintained a quiet dignity, all while going to extraordinary lengths to care for her family; and
WHEREAS, Edith R. Wyden will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends, and colleagues; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Edith R. Wyden imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixth day of July, 2011, do hereby commemorate Edith R. Wyden for her grace-filled life and do* hereby express our condolences to her family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Edith R.Wyden.
