TRIBUTE TO THE BURLEY/HOBBES FAMILY REUNION
WHEREAS, The City of Chicago is privileged to be the host city for the Burley/Hobbs Family Reunion on July 1 through July 3, 2011; and
WHEREAS, The Burley/Hobbs Family Reunion is the first gathering of the extended family members in one coalescence under the theme "Remembering Where We Came From - To Know Where We Are Going"; and
WHEREAS, The celebration of this First Burley/Hobbs Family Reunion marks a rejuvenation of familial ties and traditions that have been passed down. The earliest record dating 1870 indicates the foundation of the family originated in Warren, Georgia from the union of Hampton Burley and Emerline Folder. At the time of Emerline's passing, it was noted that this union produced three girls and one boy, Josephine, Nancy, Jimmy, and Marlion; and
WHEREAS, In 1884, the eldest daughter, Josephine Burley, married Thomas Hobbs. This union conceived twelve children, all born and raised in Warren, Georgia. These progeny scattered across the United States. By the early 1900's, several branches had made their home in this city; and
WHEREAS, The initial reunion of this lineage emphasizes the importance of these special bonds of both blood and cultural heritage. The Burley/Hobbs family has persevered through their migration northward and has flourished in this city that has always been a port of entry for the worthy and strong people of many races and nationalities. This family has shown that they exemplify and uphold such honored and cherished traditions; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Michelle Harris, Alderman of the 8th Ward, has apprised this august body of this noteworthy occasion; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the City of Chicago City Council, assembled here this 6th Day of July, 2011 AD, do hereby salute the Hurley/Hobbes Family on the joyous occasion of their special reunion, extend our sincerest welcome to all in attendance and declare July 1 through July 3, 2011 to be "Bu...
