RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Mickey Rooney has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety-three; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Mickey Rooney was an iconic American film star who was one of the most enduring and popular performers in show business history; and
WHEREAS, Mickey Rooney appeared in more than 300 films and brought joy to generations of fans, from his early roles as a child star to his later portrayals of character actors; and
WHEREAS, Born Joseph Yule, Jr., in Brooklyn, New York, to actor parents, Mickey Rooney got his start performing on the vaudeville stage and in silent films; and
WHEREAS, Mickey Rooney was made a contract player for MGM in 1934; and
WHEREAS, In 1937 Mickey Rooney landed the role of Andy Hardy in the iconic film series which propelled him to national acclaim and popularity for his feisty teen-aged antics and boy-next-door charm; and
WHEREAS, Mickey Rooney soon became the top box office draw in the country and appeared in Boys Town with Spencer Tracy and alongside Judy Garland in a string of widely-acclaimed musicals; and
WHEREAS, After serving in World War II entertaining the troops, Mickey Rooney returned to Hollywood and carved out a career as a character actor in films such as The Bridges of Toko-Ri and The Bold and the Brave; and
WHEREAS, Mickey Rooney's long and illustrious career also included films such as Requiem for a Heavyweight and The Black Stallion for which he received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, talent and dedication of Mickey Rooney serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Mickey Rooney to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Mickey Rooney will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives...
