RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Michael Ivers has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 69; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A native of the South Side of Chicago, Michael Ivers was the loving husband of Greta; and
WHEREAS, Michael Ivers served as a Roman Catholic priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago from 1974 to 2001; and
WHEREAS, During the majority of his 27 years of ministry, Michael Ivers was assigned to parishes in African-American communities where he earned a reputation as a "force of nature"; and
WHEREAS, A champion for the poor and affordable housing, Michael Ivers had been Pastor of St. Agatha Parish where he led efforts to improve the lives of people in the North Lawndale community; and
WHEREAS, After leaving the priesthood, Michael Ivers served as the Commissioner of the Chicago Housing Authority under Mayor Richard M. Daley and as the Commissioner of Chicago's Zoning Board of Appeals under Mayor Rahm Emanuel; and
WHEREAS, Michael Ivers most recently worked as the Chief Executive Officer of the Yuma Arizona Community Food bank; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Michael Ivers serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Michael Ivers was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his wife, Greta, his mother, Loretta, his siblings and his stepchildren, Michael Ivers imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this ninth day of November, 2016, do hereby commemorate Michael Ivers for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Michael Ivers.
