RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Reverend Thomas McHugh has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-eight; and
WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Thomas McHugh was a widely admired member of the religious community who aided Chicago's poor for more than four decades; and
WHEREAS, Born in Chicago, the Reverend Thomas McHugh graduated from Quigley Preparatory Seminary and the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Thomas McHugh was ordained in 1949 and served as an Assistant Pastor at several Chicago parishes, including St. Basil, St. Mel/Holy Ghost, Our Lady of Mercy, St. Mary, Star of the Sea, and Our Lady of Lourdes; and
WHEREAS, During his ministry at Our Lady of Lourdes, the Reverend Thomas McHugh dedicated himself to Chicago's growing Filipino population; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Thomas McHugh was named Pastor of Chicago's St. Matthias Parish in 1976 and remained there until his retirement in 1993; and
WHEREAS, A child of the Depression, the Reverend Thomas McHugh made it a priority to care for the poor which led him to start a food pantry at St. Matthias in the lower level of the church; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Thomas McHugh inspired the lives of many through his great personal goodness; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Reverend Thomas McHugh serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Thomas McHugh will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends, and parishioners; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Reverend Thomas McHugh imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighth day of June , 2011, do hereby commemorate the Reverend Thomas McHugh for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
