RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Arthur J. Smith, Sr., has completed his tenure as a member of the Chicago Police Board, the independent civilian body responsible for overseeing activities of the Chicago Police Department; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Board's powers and responsibilities include deciding disciplinary matters involving police officers and nominating candidates for Superintendent of Police to the Mayor; and
WHEREAS, Arthur J. Smith, Sr., the President of Art's Enterprises, Inc., was among nine members of the civilian board who were appointed by Mayor Richard M. Daley with the advice and consent of the Chicago City Council; and
WHEREAS, During his esteemed tenure, Arthur J. Smith, Sr., ably represented the interests of the people of the City of Chicago and demonstrated the highest standards of professionalism and public service; and
WHEREAS, Arthur J. Smith, Sr., continues to ably serve the public interest as a valued member of the Illinois State Police Merit Board which ensures a fair and equitable merit process for the selection of Illinois State Trooper candidates and the promotion and discipline of Illinois State Police officers; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Arthur J. Smith, Sr., serve as an example to all; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-eighth day of July, 2011, do hereby express our sincere gratitude to Arthur J. Smith, Sr., for his dedication and service as a member of the Chicago Police Board and do hereby express our warmest and best wishes for his continued success in all of his future endeavors; and
