WHEREAS, Eleven-month-old Princeton Chew was wounded in a mass shooting perpetrated by gang members in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on September 28, 2015; and
WHEREAS, T,he shots rang out at 7:30 p.m. in the 5300-block of South Aberdeen Avenue as Princeton Chew was returning home from a family outing in the company of his pregnant mother, Patricia Chew, 23, and his grandmother, Lolita Wells, 43; and
WHEREAS, Deering District Patrol Officers. Michael Modzelewski and John Coneely responded to the scene and found a woman clutching a baby and pleading for help; and
WHEREAS, Finding that no ambulances were present on the scene, the officers broke Chicago Police Department protocol and put the child in the back seat of their patrol car and rushed him to Stroger Hospital; and
WHEREAS, By breaking the rules, the officers "probably saved the life" of the child according to Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy; and
WHEREAS, Though Princeton Chew survived the shooting, his mother and grandmother were pronounced dead on arrival at Stroger Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Authorities say that two others were wounded by the gunfire and that the case remains under investigation; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fourteenth day of October 2015, do hereby recognize Deering District Patrol Officers Michael Modzelewski and John Coneely for their decisive and heroic actions which are believed to have saved the life of a wounded child; and
