RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING UKRAINIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY

WHEREAS, the 25^th anniversary of Ukrainian Independence will be celebrated on August 24, 2016; and

WHEREAS, this august body has been notified of this important event by the Honorable Alderman Brian Hopkins of the 2^nd Ward; and

WHEREAS, On August 24, 1991, the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine's legislative body) declared the Independence of Ukraine from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the creation of an independent and democratic Ukraine; and

WHEREAS, Ukrainian Independence Day is a national holiday filled with parades, fireworks and other celebrations; and

WHEREAS, Ukraine continues battling against foreign domination of this sovereign nation; and

WHEREAS, The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America is sponsoring Ukrainian Festival 2016 in Smith Park which will commemorate Ukrainian Independence Day; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this twentieth day of July, 2016, do hereby recognize the cultural and historical significance of Ukranian Independence Day.
