TRIBUTE TO PASTOR WALTER LEE WILLIAMS
WHEREAS, Pastor Walter Lee Williams, a giving and committed man of God, was taken from this world on July 12, 2012; and
WHEREAS, Pastor Williams was born in Starkville, Missouri to Joe and Estell Williams, the second of 9 children. At an early age, he was attracted to the service of God. He moved to Chicago in 1953 with his wife Luebirder and two children, Gussie Robinzine and Dorothy Williams; and
WHEREAS, Pastor Williams was ordained on May 12, 1959. In 1960, became a member of Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, where he served as Assistant Pastor to the late Reverend Lane. In January of 1963, he founded and organized St. Andrews Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, currently located at 2701 W. Flournoy Street; and
WHEREAS, Pastor Williams served the community for half a century. In 1966, he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Gage Park, helping to lead the charge for civil rights here in Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Pastor Williams stayed active in the church and community during his career as a supervisor at Amoco Engineering Company from 1962 until his retirement in 1977. He was also a member of the National Baptist Convention, USA and the Masonic Lodge; and
WHEREAS, Pastor Williams served his congregation and community for nearly 50 years, feeding the hungry, visiting the sick and shut in, and praying for those in need; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council gathered together this 13lh Day of March, 2013 AD, do hereby express our sincere sorrow upon the passing of Pastor Walter Lee Williams, a great civil rights and community leader in Chicago, and extend our deepest condolences to his daughters Gussie Robinzine and Dorothy Williams, as well as his extended family.
