RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, William Martin has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, William Martin was a longtime resident of Oak Park and a prominent member of the legal community; and
WHEREAS, William Martin graduated from Fenwick High School and earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Loyola University; and
WHEREAS, William Martin was the lead Cook County prosecutor in the case against mass murderer Richard Speck and co-authored the book "The Crime of the Century: Richard Speck and the Murders That Shocked the Nation"; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his career, William Martin demonstrated the highest ethical standards and was widely regarded by his peers; and
WHEREAS, William Martin left the Cook County State's Attorney in 1969 and joined the faculty of Northwestern University School of Law; and
WHEREAS, William Martin specialized in ethics and criminal law while in private practice; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of William Martin serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared William Martin to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved children, the Honorable Marc, Patrick, Colleen, Victoria, Douglas and Kelly and his eight adoring grandchildren, William Martin imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-sixth day of July, 2017, do hereby commemorate William Martin for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of William Martin.
