RESOLUTION HONORING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE
CENTER DOCENT PROGRAM

WHEREAS, The Chicago Architecture Center (formerly the Chicago Architecture Foundation) Docent Program includes 450 volunteer docents who lead 85 different architecture tours, including tours in the Loop and other Chicago neighborhoods, cemeteries, suburban areas, and on the Chicago River; and

WHEREAS, On several occasions, the Chicago Architecture Center's tours have been cited by U.S. News & World Report as the "Number 1 thing to do in Chicago"; and

WHEREAS, Docents are the backbone of the Chicago Architecture Center, sharing their passion for Chicago's rich architecture heritage with both tourists and Chicagoans alike; and

WHEREAS, The mission of the Chicago Architecture Center is to "help audiences learn why design matters", and each docent advances this mission by crafting tours and stories in their own words, which makes each tour unique and memorable; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago Architecture Center's docent training includes weeks of studying architecture, walking the streets, and writing and rewriting tours to make them perfect; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago Architecture Center's first docent training class began in April 1971 and graduated in June 1971 on the steps of the Chicago Cultural Center; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago Architecture Center's Docent Program has been teaching Chicago's architectural history to tourists and Chicagoans for 50 years; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this twenty-fourth day of February, 2021, do hereby congratulate the Chicago Architecture Center on the 50th anniversary of the Docent Program and express our sincere gratitude to the Docent Program for keeping Chicago's architecture history alive; and
