Memorial Resolution for Doristeen Walker
WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that the members of this chamber learned of the departure of Doristeen Walker on July 18, 2017; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed body has been notified of her passing by the Honorable Emma Mitts, Alderman of the 37th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Doristeen was born on November 11, 1946, to the late Georgians Virden and Lawrence "Shorty" Abrams, in Jackson, Mississippi. She was one of five children; and
WHEREAS, She attended Westside Elementary School and Westside High School in Mississippi. Doristeen moved to Chicago and graduated from Farragut High School. Doristeen attended Bryman Medical School and received her degree in Nursing from Malcolm X College; and
WHEREAS, In 1963, Doristeen had a daughter, Terry Lynn Calhoun. She married Fred Walker in 1986; and
WHEREAS, Doristeen confessed her love of Christ at an early age. She was a faithful member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She was a member of the Loving Heart Committee; and
WHEREAS, Doristeen worked at Cook County Hospital for thirty-two years; and
WHEREAS, Doristeen Walker leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Terry (Mario) Calhoun; sisters, Earnestine Wallace and Shirley Hunter; brother, Fred Birden; and a host of nieces, nephews, uncles, cousins and friends; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Walker was preceded in death by her parents, Georgiana and Lawrence "Shorty" Abrams; husband, Fred L. Walker; step-father George Virden Sr.; sister, Joanna Virden; grandsons, Cameron (Crystal) Porter, Jevon (Leasha) Porter, Terrence (Nicole) Garner; seventeen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and
WHEREAS, Doristeen Walker touched the lives of all who knew her as somebody who
cared deeply for family and friends. She will be greatiy missed, but the memory of her character will live on in those who knew and loved her; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here...
