RESOLUTION HONORING BLUES LEGEND AND CLUB OWNER
GEORGE "BUDDY" GUY UPON HIS SEVENTY-FIFTH BIRTHDAY
WHEREAS, George "Buddy" Guy has been recognized as a unique voice in American music since the late 1950s and been featured on nearly 70 albums and collections of music wherein his unique guitar style and vocals are captured for his countless fans to enjoy now and to share with future generations interested in his pioneering role in creating the Chicago Blues sound; and
WHERAS, Buddy Guy has earned 23 W.C. Handy Awards, has won six Grammy awards, was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2003, was awarded Billboard Magazine's The Century Award, has been inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, was listed 13th in Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Guitar Players of All Time, has received numerous honors from the readers and critics of Downbeat magazine and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005; and
WHERAS, Buddy Guy was born July 30, 1936, in Lettsworth, Louisiana, began playing guitar with bands in Baton Rouge in the early 1950s, moved to Chicago in 1957, and came to know Muddy Waters, Magic Sam, Otis Rush, Junior Wells and other influential musicians; and
WHEREAS, Buddy Guy has had a successful career as a band leader and lead guitarist for many decades and his importance in the development and continuity of American blues music has been touted by his friends and fellow musicians Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughn and others; and
WHEREAS, Buddy Guy has also been a leading nightclub owner and operator in Chicago since opening his Buddy Guy's Legends venue on June, 9, 1989, at 754 South Wabash Avenue in Chicago's South Loop. He relocated his club to a facility that he renovated at 700 South Wabash Avenue on June 15, 2010; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert W. Fioretti, Alderman of the 2nd Ward, has apprised this august body of the significant and noteworthy milestones for George "Buddy" Guy and the entire blues community; no...
