RESOLUTION HONORING JAMES P. O'DONNELL

 

WHEREAS, Battalion Chief James O'Donnell has retired after forty-one years of service to the Chicago Fire Department, making him one of the Chicago Fire Department's longest-serving firefighters.

 

WHEREAS, This body was informed of that honor by Alderman Samantha Nugent.

 

WHEREAS, "Jimmy" O'Donnell is a Chicago born native and alumni of Gordon Tech High School who currently resides on the Northwest Side in the Sauganash neighborhood with his loving family.

 

WHEREAS, O'Donnell received his appointment on September 4, 1979 and on August 16, 1989, O'Donnell was promoted to Lieutenant, and assigned to the 3rd District Relief.

 

WHEREAS, O'Donnell served valiantly throughout the heatwave in the summer of 1995 that claimed the lives of hundreds of Chicagoans.

 

WHEREAS, O'Donnell was promoted to Captain, and on April 16, 2000, O'Donnell was promoted to Battalion Chief.

 

WHEREAS, In the wake of the World Trade Center attacks, O'Donnell and his colleagues traveled to New York City to help their fellow first responders respond to the tragedy.

 

WHEREAS, On June 10th, 2020 O'Donnell retired from 9th Battalion firehouse in the Edgewater neighborhood.

 

Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this Twenty-Second day of July 2020, do hereby express our congratulations to Battalion Chief O'Donnell on his well-deserved honor; and

Be It Further Resolved, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to James O'Donnell as a token of our honor, gratitude, and respect.
