RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has been called to eternal life at the age of 90; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, King Abdullah rose to the throne in 2005 and presided over the kingdom's modernization and economic and political growth; and
WHEREAS, King Abdullah was a proponent of a more skilled workforce, oversaw the building of universities and provided programs that offered scholarships abroad for Saudi students; and
WHEREAS, Under the rule of King Abdullah, Saudi Arabia introduced municipal elections and for the first time appointed women to seats in the Shura Council, the kingdom's advisory body; and
WHEREAS, King Abdullah additionally pledged that women would be allowed to vote and seek election to municipal offices in 2015; and
WHEREAS, King Abdullah was a supporter of interfaith dialogue and a widely admired figure who sought stability in the Middle East; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of King Abdullah serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, King Abdullah will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, King Abdullah imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighteenth day of March, 2015, do hereby commemorate King Abdullah for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
