RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Dr. Roderick "Rory" Childers has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-three; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A resident of the Hyde Park neighborhood, Dr. Roderick "Rory" Childers was a widely admired member of the medical community and the loving husband of Michele; and
WHEREAS, Born in Paris and raised in Dublin, Dr. Roderick "Rory" Childers came from a prominent Irish family; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Roderick "Rory" Childers was the son of the Honorable Erskine Hamilton Childers, the fourth President of the Republic of Ireland, and the grandson of author and Irish nationalist Robert Erskine Childers; and
WHEREAS, A longtime professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, Dr. Roderick "Rory" Childers was an internationally-recognized authority on the use and interpretation of electrocardiograms; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Roderick "Rory" Childers pioneered the use of electrocardiograms in ambulances and elevated the standard of emergency care provided by first-responders; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his remarkable tenure, Dr. Roderick "Rory" Childers demonstrated both a sharp intellect and a wit in teaching generations of medical students; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his work in cardiology, Dr. Roderick "Rory" Childers displayed a great passion for Irish literature and history; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Dr. Roderick "Rory" Childers serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Dr. Roderick "Rory" Childers to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Roderick "Rory" Childers will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
